Yungang Grottoes, in Datong, Shanxi, is a famous Buddhist site built in the 5th century during the Northern Wei dynasty. 五台山 Wutai Mountain
五台山位于山西省忻州市,是中国四大佛教名山之首,也是文殊菩萨的道场。由东、西、南、北、中五座平顶山峰组成,最高峰海拔3058米,有“清凉山”之称。作为世界文化遗产和5A级景区,五台山不仅是汉藏佛教交流中心,更以唐代以来保存完好的古建筑群(如显通寺、菩萨顶)和深厚佛教文化而闻名。
Mount Wutai, in Xinzhou, Shanxi, is the foremost of China’s four sacred Buddhist mountains and the sacred site of Manjushri. Comprising five flat-topped peaks, the highest at 3,058 m, it’s known as the “Cool Mountain.” A UNESCO World Heritage and 5A-level site, Wutai features well-preserved Tang-era temples and rich Buddhist culture.
悬空寺 Hanging Temple
悬空寺位于山西省大同市浑源县恒山金龙峡西侧,始建于北魏晚期(约491年)。这座距今1500多年的奇特寺庙融合了儒、释、道三教文化,依靠27根铁杉木梁巧妙嵌入峭壁支撑而成,历经千年仍屹立不倒,是探索古建筑奇观的必访胜地。
Hanging Temple, on the west side of Jinlong Gorge in Hengshan, Datong, Shanxi, was built in the late Northern Wei period (around 491 AD). Over 1,500 years old, it combines Confucianism, Buddhism, and Taoism, supported by 27 wooden beams embedded in the cliff. Still standing after centuries, it’s a must-visit site for experiencing ancient architectural marvels.
壶口瀑布 Hukou Waterfall
壶口瀑布位于山西省临汾市吉县与陕西省延安市宜川县交界处,是黄河上的特大瀑布,也是中国第二大瀑布、世界唯一的金色瀑布。黄河水流至此,由宽约500米骤然收束至50多米,汇入30多米深的“石槽”,气势磅礴,形如巨壶倾水,被誉为“黄河第一瀑”,是国家AAAAA级旅游景区。
Hukou Waterfall, on the border of Shanxi and Shaanxi, is China’s second-largest waterfall and the world’s only yellow waterfall. The Yellow River narrows sharply and plunges into a deep rock basin, forming a spectacular “pouring teapot” scene. It’s known as the “First Waterfall of the Yellow River” and is a 5A-level tourist attraction.
刀削面 Dao Xiao Mian
刀削面起源于山西省,是汉族传统面食,入选“中国十大面条”。以独特削面技法和柳叶形面条闻名,口感“外滑内筋、软而不黏”。制作讲究,讲求“刀不离面”,常配肉炸酱、番茄酱或羊肉汤,并佐以老陈醋,被誉为“面食之王”。
Shanxi-originated Dao Xiao Mian is a traditional Chinese noodle, known as one of China’s “Top Ten Noodles.” Hand-shaved into willow-leaf shapes, it’s chewy yet smooth. Served with meat sauce, tomato sauce, or lamb soup and aged vinegar, it’s called the “King of Noodles.”
八珍汤 (太原头脑) Ba Zhen Soup
八珍汤,又称“头脑”,是山西太原独有的清真传统名汤,由明末清初文人兼医学家傅山创制,具有温补滋养功效。它由羊肉、羊髓、酒糟、煨面、藕根、长山药、黄芪、良姜八种主要食材熬制而成,呈汤糊状,是兼具药膳与美食特色的传统佳品。
Bazhen Soup, or “Tounao,” is a traditional halal specialty from Taiyuan, Shanxi, created by scholar Fu Shan in the late Ming–early Qing era. Made with eight ingredients—lamb, marrow, fermented rice, noodles, lotus root, Chinese yam, astragalus, and galangal—it’s a nourishing, thick medicinal-style soup.
百花烧麦 Shaomai
百花烧麦是山西大同的传统特色小吃,列入非物质文化遗产,以凤临阁制作最为著名,被誉为“天下第一笼”。其特点是皮薄如纸、馅嫩多汁,形似盛开的梅花,顶部褶皱精美,常配鸡、鸭、鱼、牛、羊等多种鲜馅,食用时佐以陈醋,口感极佳。
Baihua Shaomai, a traditional specialty from Datong, Shanxi, is an intangible cultural heritage known for its delicate, paper-thin wrappers and juicy fillings. Shaped like a blooming plum flower and often filled with chicken, duck, fish, beef, or lamb, it’s typically served with aged vinegar for an exquisite taste.
